I took a few pictures of the bike parking mess at the Islington Subway Station tonight. The sight of a bike rack completely destroyed by a car prompted me to go home and get my camera. Glad it wasn't my bike, but this sort of thing really ticks me off. I wrote up more commentary about the sad situation of bike parking and being a pedestrian around Islington Station over here.

Hi Vic, welcome to Toronto...
Hi Vic, welcome to Toronto...in traffic terms its not the friendliest place around. I would be upset if that happened to my bike too. I'm still braving the weather on the commute to work, let me know if you're into riding with me one day. Oh and if you need to borrow a bike let me know I'm kinda you're neighbor, and I have an old canadian tire winter beater mountain bike you can use if you like.
Bikes vs. Cars
I've been reading a lot today about car-related bicycle tragedies. It makes me wonder if there will ever be more awareness in urban areas, where bikes are still staggeringly outnumbered.

Jill,
Yeah, there's no shortage of bike horror stories. But don't let it get to you. Overall, cycling is very safe and a GOOD thing. Things need to improve, but it's not even close to being bad enough to turn me off. :-)
I just peeked at your blog too. Will have to read some of that!! Looks beautiful up there.
Riding to Work
Hey Franz,
I've been slacking quite a bit lately, so not as much riding. It was my bus habit that lead me to walk past Islington Station to take those bike parking pics. Although today I rode to work, then went for a really long ride after work too (I'm about to post about that).
My winter "beater" is at the bike shop now. I've got this great SRAM 7-speed hub with coaster brake in it that I managed to screw up and lose some parts. Waiting for those to come in and get it fixed before I can get that bike on the road. Gotta put the recumbent away soon with the impending doom of salt (tonight may have been the last ride).
Maybe riding together early next week would work? I usually head out between 8-8:30, but i could be convinced to go earlier or only slightly later.
